PACK 104 Cake Bake Contest

The every January Pack 104 has a Cake Bake CONTEST with Prizes !!

When:    The January Pack Meeting .... during the regular meeting !
Where:   Special tables set up to display the cakes

This is an opportunity to do something "inside" with your Cub as a Parent-Cub activity !
Make it a "FUN" thing...plan a couple weeks ahead to pick a Theme... Make the cake a day or two ahead of time (because they need to cool, and because accidents happen) !

Here is a suggested "Plan of Action"

  1. Talk with your Cub about the contest - IN THE FIRST WEEK OF JANUARY! Get his input on the theme. What should the cake should look like? Have him make a DRAWING of the cake !

  2. Gather the materials. Get a couple boxes (get extra) of cake mix. The Wal-Mart brand white/yellow mix is inexpensive and works well!

  3. Plan the decoration. Get extra frosting ! White frosting can be colored with food coloring to almost any color needed...but you will need to experiment! Gather (or make ahead of time) any needed "special" decoration pieces...the dollar store is good for this !!

  4. Get a Cake Box to cover and carry your creation ! MAKE or purchase an extra Cake-BOARD to build the cake on. This can be an extra thick piece of cardboard (cut from a box and cover with aluminum foil ). Must be one solid piece! It is worth the effort because it makes a solid place to build your "creation" and makes transporting your cake a LOT easier !!

  5. BAKE your cake on MONDAY or Tuesday (at the latest) before the Thursday Pack Meeting. Let the cake cool completely before trying to "build" the "structure". Use a bread-knife to "shave off" the dome of the cake if needed. Use a very sharp carving knife to make precise shape cuts, use a carving motion. If the cake is still hot, this will not work, cooling is important!

  6. Use the Cake Box that you obtained (or made) as a storage place for the cake while you are working on this project from Monday to Thursday! It keeps it clean, and keeps the cake from "disappearing" due to hungary little Cubs, or the family pet! And,...did I mention... cooling is important!

  7. Do the final build and apply icing on Wednesday evening. That gives it time to "Set-Up" and not be runny-looking. Use a Spoon, Butter Knife, Spatula(s), and other non-sharp instruments to apply the frosting. This is a great place to let your Cub get involved, and he can lick the tools! Remember ...if the cake is still hot when you apply frosting ...it will be a mess! Which reminds me...Cooling is important!

As in the past, each scout is expected to help bake and decorate the cake as a joint project with his parent. As he gets older he should be able to do more but remember, make his participation age appropriate and have some FUN! !

There is no need to sign up for the contest. Arrive at the church at 6:15PM
(15 minutes early) for the January Pack. Check-In your cake at the Door!!

Make out a Name-Card for your cake ahead of time on a 3x5 index card (or something similar)! Include your: Scout's Name, Den, Category.

Good luck to all!!

THIS WILL BE FUN !!

Cake BOXES and BOARDS are available at the "If its Paper" store on W Market St. for a very low
cost, and they greatly aid the "sanitary" transportation and display of your creation !!

Scout Safety

All scouts must be accompanies by Parent or Guardian when mixing and baking !!   :-)
