Pinewood Derby Rules

District Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations

  1. All boys must be registered as Cub Scouts in your Pack to participate and all cars must have been built during this school year.
  2. As much as possible, the majority of the work should be done by the Cub Scout. Parents are urged to assist and guide the Scout, but should not build the car for him. The use of power and hand tools is acceptable, but should be monitored closely, and may be done by the adult if deemed unsafe for the child. Designing, sanding, painting, decorating, etc. should be done by the Cub Scout.
  3. Only dry graphite and white Cub Scout lube may be used as lubrication on the cars. (White Cub Scout lube is NOT recommended )
  4. Car specifications: Width 2-3/4 inches; Length 7 inches or less overall; Weight 5 ounces (141.75 grams) or less total. Cars may be built up to the maximum 5 ounces by hollowing out the body of the car and adding wood or metal only, providing that the wood or metal is securely built into the body of the car. Only the Official Cub Scout Grand Prix kit may be used. NO PRE-CUT CARS WILL BE ALLOWED.
  5. Items such as figurines, ladders, windshields, headlights, etc. may be added but only for decorative purposes. No hubcaps may be used as they will not fit on the track.
  6. Wheels furnished in the official Pinewood Derby kit may not be altered in any way except the plastic seam on the flat part of the wheel may be sanded and smoothed out. The surface of the wheels must remain flat, not rounded, beveled, angled, or otherwise altered. No hubcaps. All cars must use the slots provided for the axles and wheels. These slots may not be altered in any way except to correct slot defects, see instructions with the kit for defect correction. In other words, you cannot move them.
  7. The axles (nails) furnished in the official Pinewood Derby kit may be sanded to remove burrs, but no other part of the axle may be otherwise altered.
  8. Cars must be lubricated and ready to race before being brought to the registration table. Cars will not be handled after check-in except by the officials.
  9. If a car causes a heat to be interrupted, that heat will run a second time. If the same car causes the race to be interrupted again, it may be removed from the race by the officials.
  10. The Pack's representatives to the District derby will be the three fastest cars, the one most beautiful car, and the one most original car. Remember the above rules apply to all judging categories, no exceptions.
  11. No one is allowed in the pit area except derby officials and judges.
  12. All decisions of the Battlefield District Pinewood Derby are final. Any item not covered should be referred to the BSA official Pinewood Derby kit instructions and the Cub Scout Grand Prix Guidebook.
  13. Parents are reminded to set a good example for their children when discussing rules or infractions.
  14. Above all, let's have a great race and lots of fun!

**** Scouting encourages good sportsmanship. ****
Cars will be disqualified if the Scout or his parents display unsportsmanlike conduct on the race site.
